Say "Please!"

Year 4 pupils (Daniel, Ashantae, Jade and Kelsey) have been doing some of their own action research. They wanted to find out how many people having school dinners said 'please' and 'thankyou' when choosing their meal. So they created their own data collection sheets and stood by the school dinner serving area listening

to how the pupils and cooks spoke to one another. This is what they find out:

• About half of all pupils said 'please' and thankyou' when ordering their meal
• The kitchen staff were very polite to pupils
• Some pupils just pointed

These 4 investigators are going to come back and do some more research after half term. They all felt that everyone could be more polite when ordering. "If we all don't have manners", said Daniel, "how are we all going to get along?" Ashantae commented that better manners would mean "a better school for all of us".

Year 5's Malaysian experience

The children and staff in Year 5 had a wonderful WDWTWA? week. We all thoroughly enjoyed Mr Watson's fascinating insight into the history of Barking and Dagenham, were delighted to clap along with H's Caribbean story telling and took part in lots of activities in class.

Having learnt about the legacy of the British Empire, we were taken on a journey to the far away land of Malaysia - Mrs Anderson's home country. Puan Johari (Mrs Anderson's Malay name), beautifully dressed in Malay clothes, shared her expertise. We practised greeting each other in Malay and found out lots of interesting facts about the culture and people of the country.

Next, we went into the hall to experience a range of activities including : observational drawing of Malay artefacts; colouring the Malay flag; making traditional shadow puppets; having a go at creating batik designs; and making and tasting delicious banana porridge.
